An East Hamptons Cottage

Image
1 The photographer of this charming cottage certainly tweaked my interest when I saw this shot, these cute little guys may look a bit apprehensive about posing for this photo, however the image below shows how relaxed they are about their charming home. Michael Grimm  is the photographer behind the lens of this East Hamptons home, shot for Hamptons Cottages and Garden Magazine  in 2014. When photographing the interior or exterior of a home, the image should capture a mood, a sense of belonging, a glimpse into the lives of those that live there.  Great interior photography is not about adding props and styling, it is about capturing the essence of its owners and what makes their home their sanctuary. This may be a collection of artwork, antiques or the overall style of a home. It may have a coastal or country feel, or it may feel like you are in the middle of Provence when in fact you are in a city suburb on the other side of the world. Each image should tell a story, allo...

Black and White Never Fails to Impress

Image
Photography - Mark Pinkerton Black and white is a powerful combination but how much is too much and how can it be softened to create a beautiful interior space... Black and white looks fabulous because of the dramatic contrast, however, the combination of these two tones can be overpowering. If you follow 'The Block' (Australia), you may have recently seen Dan and Carleen feature black and white in their two art deco inspired bathrooms (below). Their first bathroom received criticism from the judges, however, the second bathroom was absolutely stunning and the space achieved the first 10 this season. Above: Dan and Carleen's first bathroom appears top heavy and not at...

The Perfect Home Office/Study 'Nook'

Image
I am finally back after a long Christmas/New Year break from the blog and I've have had a pretty lazy holiday, apart from Christmas day where I had 11 for lunch but it was all fun. I have however, been working on re-landscaping my tiny back garden and thinking about re-locating my old office into my new studio, in saying that I don't want it to become an entire office, I was thinking more a small built in area or a floating desk. Office nooks are becoming popular and with the smaller home builds architects and interior designers are becoming very clever at creating these perfectly formed and aesthetically pleasing spaces. Why waste an entire room as an office/study when we could better utilise this space for a possible guest room, you may be surprised at how little space is required. Bye, bye home office, let me introduce you to home office 'nook, an empty space beside a cupboard, beneath stairs or built into kitchen cabinetry these office nooks are ingenious. It is importa...
